Biographical Overview

As Assistant Director of the Indiana Conflict Resolution Institute (ICRI), Nan serves as the coordinator of teaching and training and oversees the Institute's budget. In addition to this, Nan is a lecturer in the areas of mediation and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). She has over twenty years experience as a mediator. She was the director of the Victim Offender Reconciliation Program in Monroe County, Indiana from 1983-1987, had a private mediation practice specializing in family and community disputes from 1987-1991, and currently is an ad-hoc mediator for the Indiana Education Employment Relations Board and for Indiana’s Medicare Beneficiary Protection Mediation Program. She conducts several training workshops every year in the areas of mediation, alternative dispute resolution and interest-based negotiation. In 1988, she developed an undergraduate survey course on ADR which she still teaches today. She also teaches a graduate level introductory ADR course through IUPUI-SPEA's Executive Education Program and co-teaches a public policy mediation course at Indiana University School of Law at Indianapolis. She is certified as an assistant trainer in both civil and family mediation through the Indiana Commission for Continuing Legal Education. She is a Certified Family Mediator by the Indiana Supreme Court. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and Master of Science degree in Adult Education, both from Indiana University.

In the 2004 U.S. News and World Report graduate school rankings, the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at IUPUI was ranked 35th of 253 public affairs schools. SPEA's Indianapolis criminal justice program was ranked 3rd in the nation and the nonprofit management program was ranked 4th in the nation.
